Survey of Library Services to Juveniles in Detention

Dear library service provider:

I invite your participation in an important survey.

The Survey of Library Services to Juveniles in Detention is a comprehensive data collection project sponsored by the American Library Association.  The purpose of the project is to obtain information about the libraries serving juveniles in detention or correctional facilities in the U.S., including staffing, collections, and services.

Who is conducting the survey? The survey is supported by a grant from the ALA Office for Diversity, with additional support from the American Correctional Association, the iSchool College of Information Science and Technology at Drexel University, and the Ohio State University Libraries.

Why should you participate?  Very little is currently known about library services to this population.  Targeted information is needed to help correctional and library professionals focus resources, collaborate, and improve information services for at-risk youth.

The American Library Association has selected this project as the pilot platform to collect the very first comprehensive dataset on these services.

Results of the survey will be available in summer 2011.  A copy of the survey report can be emailed to you if you wish.  Ordering information is contained in the survey.

Your information is confidential.  Information on individual facilities is confidential, and only aggregate survey results will be published.   Participants will have the opportunity to share contact information in a future directory of juvenile detention library services providers if desired.  Participation in the directory is voluntary; no contact information will be shared without your permission.

If you have any questions, please contact Jennifer Sweeney at [email protected] or (916) 718-9442.

Thank you for your contribution to this important data collection project.
